Hello!
This is #6 of the Weekly Update. Today: a small thing about the lifecycle of a game.
The last 10%
If you are not familiar with Game Development and never made a game, you probably don’t know that the hardest part about making a game are the famous last 10%.
The development process, at least for us, always starts with a glimpse of an idea. Something that sparks your interest and pushes you to create something that you can try out. These are the very first magical moments, when you put something together and it works as you expected. Then you slowly start to evolve this idea with a lot of play testing and feedback and the game starts to grow. The next step is thinking about the Theme or Fiction the game should live in. Once you have setup your vision the execution starts. This is where most people start to drop off.
Having an idea and executing it are two different worlds. This is why we think execution is worth way more than having an idea, because if you never leave the “honeymoon phase” where you are seduced just by the idea of your game, you will never find out if you have what it takes to finish it.
When you start with Game development no one tells you how small the actual game part of your game can be. There are so many things that are easily overlooked like menu and UI interactions, balancing, AI, animations, sounds and of course bugs that will haunt you when you try to sleep.
And when you finally managed to get all those things right, this is where the last 10% start. This is where we are with Muffin Munch right now. The Game is complete on a basic level, but we need to polish, fix and improve so many things and the rate of progress really slowed down. But we are very confident that we will manage to complete those 10% also.
Wiebke was super productive the last Weeks and created the initial set of 25 Muffins that can be unlocked. We are going to reveal them with our small series “Meet the Muffins”. Here are 3 of them to kick it off:
As said we are on a very good way and we are super happy how the game turned out. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming days and have a nice Sunday!
